Interterm Trips 2024

Interterm 2024

April 16, 2024

One of the staples of the SSCA Upper School Experience is Interterm, which is held every-other-year during the Spring semester. Interterm is a week-long concentrated, out-of-the classroom period during which students engage issues of faith, leadership, and service. The Middle School Interterm focuses on leadership and service in history and government. The High School Interterm focuses on faith and service. Interterm occurs every other year and is a required aspect of SSCA’s curriculum.

Grade 6 Interterm:
During the Grade 6 Interterm, students take a series of day trips into Boston and the surrounding areas. The students see various historical and state government sights, as well as participate in various local service-learning opportunities. This year, our students visited the Museum of Science, the African Meeting House, the Museum of African American History, the Boston Public Garden, the Boston Common, walked part of the Freedom Trail, and toured the Registry Division at Boston City Hall. They also enjoyed the Boston Duck Tours, went to Fire + Ice, and took a Hingham Ferry to the New England Aquarium in Boston, MA!

Grades 7-8 Interterm:
The centerpiece of the Grades 7-8 Interterm is the overnight trip to Washington D.C. The students travel by bus to our nation’s capitol where they see the sights of our federal government. Students also participate in local service-learning opportunities.

Grades 9-10 Interterm:
Students in Grades 9-10 participate in a regional educational study, examining challenges to authority in American History. There is an overnight component to this trip as students travel to Pennsylvania.

Grades 11-12 Belize Interterm:
The flagship interterm experience at SSCA is our Belize trip. Every Interterm, SSCA students, along with faculty and staff, work primarily at a school with kids and complete work projects. The students work hard during this trip – but it ends up being a life-long memory for those who participate. This year, our students worked hard in extreme heat, played with students at St. Margret's School in Belize, created a mural, painted the outside of the school, laid the foundation and plumbing for a new school bathroom, delivered food packages, and prayed with families in the local community. Our students also learned a lot of construction skills in Belize from their chaperones!

Grades 11-12 Creation Care Interterm:
As in the past, students in Grades 11-12 also have the opportunity to participate in SSCA’s local environmental education offering, “Creation Care,” as an alternative to this overnight trip. During this year's trip, students went to a local working farm, Roger Williams Park Zoo, and the New England Aquarium!
