Welcome to our Warrior Spotlight campaign!
 
Throughout the fall and winter months, we highlighted a few of our Warriors! These students are members of our athletic teams and are in Grades 6-12. Learn more about our Warriors by reading their stories below and discover why our students love joining SSCA's Athletics! 
 
These stories are featured on our social media outlets (Instagram and Facebook) and are published in our Weekly Warrior Newsletter. 
 
Meet our Warriors!
 
 
Sy'Mara PalmerSy'Mara Palmer - Grade 11
 
Sy’Mara Palmer is currently in the 11th grade and has been attending SSCA for 6 years. She has been a part of SSCA Athletics for about 3 years and started playing sports when she was 4 years old.
 
Sy’Mara played volleyball in the fall and will be a part of the track and field team in the spring. If she could play another sport, she would play tennis or join the cheerleading team. Sy’Mara’s sports hero is her brother.
 
According to Sy’Mara, the best part about competing is “the rush….just kidding. The best part about competing is when it’s fun and when you challenge yourself”. Sy’Mara enjoys practicing with her teammates because “we listen to music and hype each other up!”
 
EmilyEmily DeAmicis - Grade 11
 
Emily DeAmicis is currently in the 11th grade and has been attending SSCA for 11 years. She has been a part of SSCA Athletics for about 7 years and started playing sports when she was 3 years old. 
 
Emily played soccer and volleyball in the fall and will play softball in the spring. If she could play another sport, she would play basketball. Emily’s sports hero is Simone Biles. 
 
According to Emily, the best part about competing is “when you are challenged to work hard, especially when the outcome is winning!” Emily enjoys practicing with her teammates because “they play with energy, laugh a lot, and play music”.
 
NolaNola Sanchez - Grade 7
 
Nola Sanchez is currently in the 7th grade and has been attending SSCA for 9 years. She has been a part of SSCA Athletics for 2 years and started playing sports when she was 5 years old.
 
In the fall, Nola was on the Volleyball team. She is currently on the Basketball team and will be on the Softball team in the spring. If she could play another sport, she would play Tennis. Nola’s sports hero is Serena Williams. 
 
According to Nola, the best part about competing is “the adrenaline and the feeling of winning”. Nola enjoys practicing with her teammates because “they cheer for me and make me feel better when I mess up. I love working as a team with them!”
 
CoreyCorey Bowdre - Grade 10
 
Corey Bowdre is currently a sophomore and has been attending SSCA for almost 5 years. He has also been a part of SSCA Athletics for about 5 years and started playing sports at 11 years old.
 
In the fall, Corey was on the Track & Field Team and the Indoor Track Team, and is thinking of joining the Baseball Team in the spring. If he could play another sport, he would participate in Taekwon-Do. Corey’s sports heros are Usain Bolt, Allyson Felix, Michael Johnson, and Kobe Bryant. 
 
According to Corey, the best part about competing is “watching myself and my team improve overtime. Winning is fun too!”. Corey enjoys practicing with his teammates because they enhance the experience and make practice more exciting.
 
IndiyahIndiyah Sidhartha - Grade 12 
 
Indiyah Sidhartha is currently a senior and has been attending SSCA for 6 years. She has also been a part of SSCA Athletics for 6 years and started playing sports when she was 10 years old.
 
Indiyah currently plays Soccer, Basketball, and Softball. If she could play another sport she would play Rugby because of Ilona Maher. Indiyah’s sports hero is Rachel Garcia.
 
According to Indiyah, the best part about competing is “the bond I make with my teammates''. Through her teammates, Indiyah has learned how to keep going even when she falls.
 
AveryAvery Busby - Grade 11
 
Avery Busby is currently a junior and has been attending SSCA for 2 years. She has also been a part of the SSCA Athletics for 2 years and started playing sports when she was 10 years old.
 
Avery currently plays Volleyball and Basketball at SSCA. If she could play another sport, she would be a part of Track and Field. Avery's sports hero is Kobe Bryant.
 
According to Avery, the best part about competing is “when my teammates and I work together”. Avery and her teammates make sure to make practice fun by telling jokes and encouraging one another.
 
EnguangEnguang (Joshua) Xiao - Grade 12
 
Joshua Xiao is currently a senior and has been attending SSCA for 3 years. He has also been a part of SSCA Athletics for 3 years and started playing sports when he was 8 years old.
 
Joshua currently plays Varsity Soccer and Varsity Basketball at SSCA. If he could play another sport, he would be a part of Track and Field.
 
According to Joshua, the best part about competing is “when there is a close game and you and your team work really hard and win the game”. During practice, Joshua and his teammates make sure to work hard but to also have fun!
 
DheniaDhenia Mercier - Grade 12 
 
Dhenia (Dee) Mercier is currently a senior and has been attending SSCA for 3 years. She has also been a part of SSCA Athletics for 3 years and started playing sports when she was 3 years old.
 
Dee currently plays Soccer and Softball at SSCA. If she could play another sport, she would cheer or step dance. Her sports hero is Naomi Osaka.
 
According to Dee, the best part about competing is “the rush of the game and when you make a great play for your team that affects the whole game!” During practice, Dee and her teammates bond by giving each other advice and building each other up.
 

StephenStephen Dixon - Grade 12
 
Stephen Dixon is currently a senior and has been attending SSCA for 4 years. He has also been a part of SSCA Athletics for 4 years and started playing sports at the age of 14. Stephen currently plays Varsity Soccer, Varsity Basketball, and Track & Field at SSCA.
 
In the past, he has played Junior Varsity Basketball. If he could play another sport, he would play football! Stephen's sports hero is Jayson Tatum.
 
According to Stephen, he believes that the best part about competing is "winning and being able to show off all the time and effort you put into a sport". He also loves to practice with his teammates because they push him to work harder but also make practice fun!
