SPORTS NEWS

Sports report:

The South Shore Christian Academy girls varsity basketball team has confronted the year as their title demands: as Warriors. Propelling their historic season with a relentless fighting spirit, they stood undefeated at 20-0 until they lost there last two regular season games.

Possibly one of the most impressive elements of their success lies in their underdog nature. As an undersized squad of only eight girls, their challenges are inherently more straining. They have faced what seems like a myriad of illnesses and injuries which culminated in the recent loss of one of their star players, senior Sarah Colligan, to a knee injury. Sarah will be greatly missed by her teammates, for she acts both as a savvy forward and one of the tri-captains. However, the Warriors compensate for their shortcomings with fierce determination.

When asked the secret of their success, Coach John Atwater responded, "The Warriors play hard, execute well, and mesh smoothly as a team. They are not a team of rookies, but of experienced players who motivate those with potential to rise to greatness." Two of the premier players mentioned, tri-captains Julianne Atwater and Katie Warren, have both had tremendous seasons this year. Juju has played varsity for 6 years and has achieved an impressive career record of over 1500 points. This is Katie's fourth year on varsity and she is heavily relied upon as a strong defender and versatile player, setting a record for most points in a season and averaging over 20 points per game. The Warriors' performance this year is also greatly due to the talent of the other members: Rebekah Marotta's fierce rebounding, Chanel Lufkin's defense, Katelyn Sprague's ability as forward, Leah Perera's shooting, and Taylor Cross's athleticism.

"They are a great group of girls to play with. Regardless of the outcome of the game, they always desire the other team to walk away with a sense that they faced an opponent who never backed down, played clean, and had good sportsmanship," said Coach Atwater.

With a strong 20-2 regular season record the girls team was seeded second in Division 4 and Monday night our Warriors won their first round MIAA Tournament game in impressive fashion defeating South Shore Vocational Tech 50-35. The game was played as a home game at the Eastern Nazarene College field house in front of a large and enthusiastic SSCA fan base. The second round game is 7:00pm Friday February 26th at South Shore Vocational Tech. With more post-season still games still looming, the team promises to continue the battle with their unique Warrior spirit.
