 Alumni Althetes in the News

Archie Reed, '08, has had a successful season with the Fighting Scots at Gordon College. He has been a contributing factor in their 8-7-2 record for the season. Reed (Abington, Mass.) recently led the Scots with two goals, both coming in the second period, and within three minutes of each other in their victory over Regis College.

Newtonian Takes on a New Meaning

The Upper School science class recently experimented with "Ookey Oozey" to better understand liquid suspension, colloid, and Newtonian fluid.

"Ookey Oozy" is not a Newtonian fluid.  It is classified as a non-Newtonian fluid.  It does not behave like an ideal liquid.  The "Ookey Oozey" is made up of millions of tiny solid particles of cornstarch suspended in water.  It's a special type of liquid suspension known as colloid.

Other examples of non-Newtonian fluids are ketchup and quicksand. They don't behave exactly like your "Ookey Oozey", but they sure don't behave like water either.  The slower you move through a non-Newtonian fluid, like quicksand, the less resistance you experience.

Boxtops for Education

Boxtops for Education is a program which enables participating companies to make donations to specific schools. SSCA takes part in this program by asking families to collect the small "Boxtops for Education" emblems on many common grocery product packages. These little squares are found on many products that you probably already use.  Please clip them and send them into school throughout the year with your child. The Parent Fellowship council will send the emblems in for redemption. Incentives are given to the Lower School classes who collect the most so please write your child's grade on each donation sheet or envelope. There is a collection box in the Lower School hallway.
