Visual Arts
SSCA offers art enrichment for elementary students. A comprehensive drawing, painting and sculpture program is offered for grades 7-12. Class trips take advantage of the many cultural offerings in the Boston area as well as museums in New York City. During Interterm week, students can participate in workshops hosted at area studios. Workshops include glass making, clay and printmaking.
Students have received numerous awards in area art shows. SSCA graduates have gained acceptance to RISD, Pratt Institute, Massachusetts College of Art, and Savannah College of Art and Design to pursue careers in the field of art.
AP Studio Art
AP Studio Art offers preparation of one of three portfolios: drawing, 2-D or 3-D art. Portfolios submitted to the College Board are judged on quality, breadth and concentration.
Art teacher, Mary Marley, is a published artist and an active competitor. She holds a membership in various associations including, Christians in the Visual Arts and the National Association of Women Artists, New York City.
SSCA students are currently working on "Memory Projects", which is a worldwide initiative to provide portraits for orphans. This artwork is usually the only self-portrait an orphan will ever possess. The project will go to orphans in Nicaragua.
This year, SSCA students will compete in the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards and the Small Independent Art League (SISAL). Each year, our students place and earn prizes in media, such as, oil, fiber, graphics, charcoal, pencil, and photography.
Many graduates have pursued careers in illustration, textile design, and landscape architecture and have captured the attention of company brands such as, Ethan Allen and Donna Karan.
